A lost key, a key that will not turn and a piece left in a lock can all stop your day, but they are different service requests. Start with what happened and what access you still have. Clear information helps a provider arrange an appropriate assessment without assuming that every key problem needs a new lock.

Identify the immediate access problem

Say whether you are outside a home, business or vehicle and whether there is a safe alternative way for an authorized person to enter. If the key is missing, explain whether it may be inside or has been lost elsewhere. If it is stuck or broken, stop applying force. Describe the condition rather than attempting to remove components or pushing another object into the lock.

  • Contact emergency services when someone is in immediate danger.
  • Have an accessible contact number and exact location ready.
  • Ask what proof of ownership or authority is required.

Keep the repair question separate from the key question

A missing key raises questions about replacement and who may still have access. A resistant lock raises questions about operation. A broken key may need extraction followed by assessment of the remaining key and hardware. Ask what inspection is included and whether the proposed work resolves the original problem. Removing a fragment or opening a door does not automatically address an underlying fault.

Prepare home, business or vehicle details for the visit

For a vehicle, provide its year, make and model and say whether another key works. For rented or commercial property, identify the person who can authorize changes. Ask the provider to explain the estimate, any additional work and how approval will be obtained. At handover, confirm normal operation and decide on a spare or key-control plan so the same uncertainty does not become the next urgent call.

Emergency locksmith questions

Does a broken key mean the lock is ruined?

That cannot be decided from the symptom alone. Ask for an assessment of both the key and lock before authorizing replacement.

Your lock, door or vehicle may need a different approach. Confirm the equipment and proposed work with the service provider before arranging a job.
